Apple Follows The Rats

Thanks to the Sacramento Bee's, Dan Weintraub, for the heads up on this item from Business Week magazine. Looks like Apple Corp. is shifting their money to Nevada to get a break on taxes.

Congrats, to all you anti- corporation types out there. It's working. They're leaving...or at least their money is.

This is not a new thing, Fred. Did you know that Pacific Lumber is a Delaware Corporation?

I know it's not exactly a new thing. It's an growing trend, though. That article mentions 37 corporations that left the state in 2004.

As far as Palco is concerned, I had no idea what state they're based in. I figured maybe Texas or Washington, maybe? But, thanks for the heads up.

Not too different than American Corporations looking overseas for cheap labor... just another form of lowering their opporating costs.

What's your views on Globalization Fred? How far are you going to take this corporate discussion?

Corporations are trying to do business. As the article I posted suggested, at least some corporations [and non- corp businesses] are heading out of state, and this has been going on for some time.

You seem to think that we can keep on beating on the businesses that provide jobs, and they'll just suck it up an go along with it.

I, for one, don't have a problem with them voting with their feet and moving elsewhere.

I suspect your answer would be to imprison those companies, and try and force them to do the State's bidding.

I wouldn't do it, and I would expect these nasty corps, or the other private businesses to do the same.

Interesting: "Think globally, act locally...", except for businesses, that is.

Castro has the best idea (put up goon boxes with machine guns) to keep the folks from leaving. It worked swell for eastern Europe for many years. Another plan used by the National Socialists was to allow folks to leave with only what they could wear.

Are you suggesting restructuring California's tax system? Hard to compete with states such as Nevada, Florida, etc. and their tax system. I don't see that as anything more than a company trying to lower their costs and please their shareholders.

I assume the majority of people around here that have issues with corporations are concerned about their effect on small rural areas, which has little to do with your article.

Oh the horror!! Competition! The lack of it is the reason Humboldt County/California pays $3.00+-/gal. for motor fuel including a tax on a tax. Now there's a novel idea unique to California, tax the taxes!

Anon 5:12: For your information, the ONLY entity that you/we are forced to do business with is Government. They have a monopoly on force there is NO corporation that has that power. Go to: to:http://www.lewrockwell.com/tucker/society-in-jail.html

Didn't Arkley move his HQ out of CA to avoid taxes?? Of course, he still lives here and buys politicians at a discount.

Which politicians has Arkley "bought"? anonymous? What'd he do, twist their arm to let him improve the zoo? Force them to let him donate money to the Boardwalk? Say it isn't so! The horror!

The left has to consider what happens when Atlas shrugs. But they won't until it is too late. Then they will scurry around like ants whose anthill has been flooded - except that ants have more work ethics than they do, sothey will realll-lll-ll-ly be in trouble.

I think Salzman is terrified that Arkley is going to back someone other than Paul, so he has created this demon to try and prevent it. Salzman did something that pissed Arkley off. In Salzman's Orwellian world, saying Arkley is trying to buy politicians can only mean one thing, and that is that it is Salzman who is involved in buying politicians.

Like Salzman could buy anyone. I don't get the infatuation with this guy.

I join with 10:29 - Salzman is nothing and has delusions of granduer. Many however (including papers like the T-S) let him have too much say in what they do and by giving him the reigns, he now thinks that he has power.

He's been publicly outed for being a fraud. Likes to go after private citizens that disagree with his "position" (like I really care) and use fake names.

You need to recognize him as being a part in all of this, but power - he's a lame duck now that he's been exposed as a fake.

Just remember that hit counters tell you nothing. Each "hit" represents a request to the site server for every element on your page (blog). That's every graphic and block of copy. It is also indiscriminet about who visits. I can come to your blog 3 times in one day and your server serves up 15 itmes each time. That would count as 45 hits. Whereas a "unique visitor" counter would accurately show you I visited once in that day.

At 6:10 AM, Blogger Fred Mangels said...

Yeah, I mentioned that earlier on.

This hitcounter apparently doesn't specify unique visitors.

Years ago, Netscape had some hit counter site that would tell differentiate between general hits and unique visitors. Sadly, the shut that down because they didn't want to hassle with it anymore.

fantasy romance writer: If you go http://www.sitemeter.com/, they offer free hit counters and will place them on your blog for you. You just enter your blog url into the form they provide and you'll have a hit counter.

They do that for blogspot and a few other blog sites.

Fred check out the hit counter I linked to on FSW's blog. It does lots of cool stuff including unique visitors and areas of origin as well as graphs and trends.

I'll check it out, Leo. Thanks.

It does not surprise me either, Corporations have no sense of responsibility to anything beyond the bottom line. I just read in the NYT that when you order fast food at the restaurant drive through you could be talking to someone in Southern California even if you are in Eureka, they take your order and send it via email back to the fast food store, so even though you are ording from a store a few feet from you, your order goes through Southern California. It was in yesterday's NYT.

At 5:43 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That is just ridiculous. All you have to do is go into a fast food place and you can see the people behind the counter, sometimes they are working the counter and the window.

God - doesn't anyone THINK anymore?

You just buy into the anti-corporate bullshit and never stop to think.
